Dori, Kerrie, Katie, and Rachel
are hard at work planning this huge community service project
Central Valley High School's
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) in cooperation with
the Central Valley Education Association (CVEA) and the National
Educational Association (NEA) is planning a district-wide book
drive and literacy program. The core group for this project includes
Dori Davenport, Kerrie Folsom, Rachel Burnham, and Katie Tasca.
The theme of this immense project is Cat in the Hat. A Cat in
the Hat costume has been ordered, as well as 15 Cat in the Hat
hats. CVEA is buying hats for all of the elementary school media
specialists.
The book drive is being
held at all the Junior and Senior High Schools plus the Central
Valley Educational Services Center. The book drive bins are red
and white striped hats will be on display in each book drive
location. On March 2, Read Across America Day and Dr. Suess'
birthday, FBLA has planned to read in all 15 elementary schools
in the district. As of February 9, over 100 classrooms have signed
up and many more are on the way!
FBLA members, professionals,
and students throughout the district are going to be the readers
at the elementary schools. Some professional readers are: George
Orr (Fire Inspector), the Spokane Indians, Penny Daniels (KHQ-6),
Tom Sherry (KREM-2), Charles Rowe (KREM-2), Dave Sweeney (KXLY-4),
Richard Brown (KXLY-4), Roy Maier (WEA-EW), Jeff Brown (CVEA),
Wally Stanley (CV Superintendent), Bill Stanley (KSPS), Jay Walter
(CVSD), Mike Pearson (CVSD), Glenna Bouge (CVHS), Paul Sturm
(CVHS), and Julie Prafke (CEO of Humanix Personnel Resources).
Teachers at CVHS are not
missing out on the fun! Mrs. Brunelle and her aerobics class
will go to Adams Elementary and read to the students. The CV
basketball team and their coaches are going to read at Progress
Elementary.
Some elementary schools
are planning a full week of Dr. Suess activities. NEA has created
bookmarks and crossword puzzles that will be given to the students.
Gary Pannell, Director of Food Services, has agreed to serve
Green Eggs and Ham to the elementary students for lunch. For
dessert, he is serving birthday cake in honor of Dr. Seuss!

The Future Business Leaders
of America chapter at Central Valley High School is running a
book drive this week at each secondary school in the Central
Valley School District. Junior high and high school students
are encouraged to bring any unwanted books to school, particularly
children's books. The donations will go Vanessa Behan Crisis
Nursery, Ogden Hall, and the YWCA. "Any donations will be
a success" said Dori Davenport, a CV senior and FBLA member.
