TOUR SPONSORED BY GRHC

The Journey to the Homeland Tours sponsored by the North Dakota State University Libraries, Fargo, is planning a trip to the former Crimean German villages near Simperofol, Crimea, Ukraine. Definite plans for travel from Odessa to Simperofol will depend on whether there is a serious interest expressed from persons who wish to join the tour. Persons traveling to Crimea, will first go to Odessa and then travel with a vehicle of Odessa Intourist and translator/guide. Travel time from Odessa to Simperofol is about eight hours one way.

The total number of days including travel time for Crimean villages will be five to seven days depending on village visits, etc. The trip would include visits to the villages, overnight stay in Simperofol and Yalta. The Crimean German mother colonies are located about one to two hours from Simperofol. Daughter colonies may be a great distance away.

The priority for persons who would travel to Crimea, Ukraine would be to visit their ancestral German villages. The next Journey to the Homeland Tour is May 17-30, 1999. The 2000 tour is scheduled for late May/early June with no dates established. For future Crimea tour, there needs to be at least 10 persons or more who travel together either for May, 1999 or the year 2000.

In May, 1998, Bob Dambach of Prairie Public Television, Fargo and Michael M. Miller, Germans from Russia Bibliographer, NDSU Libraries, Fargo, traveled to Simperofol, Yalta and the Crimean villages. They were impressed with the warm reception of the local Germans, the villages themselves and the identification of the churches, cemeteries, houses, schools and other structures. They also found ethnic Germans still living in the villages. Our Crimean experience proved to be very successful and it was felt that we can now pursue a Crimean German village tour for the future. Villages visited include Friedental, Neusatz, Zurichtal, Rosental and Kronental. The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection has a laminated map available of the Crimean German villages.

Photographs taken during the May visit to Crimea can be found at the following Germans from Russia Heritage Collection website page -
