Breaking up a dog fight

Boy oh boy, this is something I had to dealt with for many years. As Sierra was always wanting to get into it with Athena. Athena is my supreme alpha female and she knew the rules. But unfortunately Sierra who was a rescue who was sold at five weeks from the breeder to a owner who then kept her in a garage for a full year before I rescued her. For some reason she hated Athena being the boss and would constantly hit her in the shoulder with her muzzle or just plain dog her. I used a lot of control work to keep fights from happening, But every once in a while esp. right after heats the big one would break out. Athena would try her hardest to not fight. But there just came a time when she said the hell with it and it was a death fight from then on! I used several methods to stop fights and the pulling the dogs apart is a good one. But you have to be able to grab them firmly and hopefully have the two people to pull them apart. Once females get into the I am going to kill you mode this is very very hard to stop. The chair has worked very well for me too. But you just have to have the chair available to be able to use it. The one thing I have found that works really well is a plastic baseball bat. I was taught this item works really well from the local musher up here. With these big dogs it is very important to break up a fight right away or sever damage or death can occur. I do not like brooms or poles as this can hurt or break bones. But a plastic bat thou can cause pain will not do any permanent damage. I know this sounds harsh but when you have a female with another female down on the ground by her throat time is very important to stop it now. I also have three bats in different parts of my house. As they the dogs know were they are, and the presence of one actually will stop a fight from beginning. I would much preferred not using the plastic kids bat, but the lives of my dogs are at stake and with my hands being so weak I can no longer pull 90 or 100 lbs dogs apart. So speed is the most important thing here plus stopping a fight with as little damage to the dogs as much as possible. I have been dealing with dogs for over 20 years and this is the method I have found for me works the best. You must keep your hands, legs, face and body away from these dogs as much as possible as sever damage can be inflicted on the owner with out the dog knowing their doing it. Dog fights are not pretty, dam scary, and can be deadly. I have seen dogs actually tear each other apart and kill each other while a owner tries desperately to break it up. Water is good, but in the winter time with frozen water pipes and hose this is not practical or if the fight is in the house a hose is not close by. I have seen canine officers try mace but that too did not work in time as the younger k9 broke both older k9 legs and the dog had to be put to sleep. I cried very hard on that one as I felt if they had the bats available the older dog's life might of been saved!

I know this method does not work with every one and some people might be greatly offended by using a plastic bat, but for me. Having seen the results of bad dog fights with a dog being totally scalped or hurt so bad it had to be put to sleep or died. This is my preferred method to breaking up a bad dog fight.

MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE LIKE A GSD.
