Teaching The Sit Method

This is one of several methods to teach your dog to sit. Now with all dogs each is different and this may not work with all dogs. But I have never seen a dog it did not work with.

Ok as usual have your dog hungry, and bored. If he was busy playing all day with the kids, then doing obedience is going to be boring. So I would crate your dog several hours before and after you work him. The after part because dogs do think of what they learned, and this helps him think better.

OK You are to stand in front of the dog, Say your dogs name loudly and excitedly then tell him sit. I would then show him the treat in your hand, raise your hand over his head letting him see the treat, go backwards over his head, toward his rear. He will have to sit in order to reach the treat. Practice this until he knows what sit means. Now it is time to have him on your left side of your body. Have a training collar on be it a prong, choke or halti. Say his name in a upbeat manner, then telling him to sit. You have your hand in a upright position and slice it down ward. You then grab the collar of the dog, with your right hand, and pull it in an upward and backward motion and with your left hand push down on his haunches. If the dog does not do as asked tell him NO, and again repeat the command Sit and using your hands to position the dog into a sit. Always tell him what he did wrong and then tell him what you want. And when he does good tell him what he did good, Good sit, Good sit. After he has this down pretty good, then practice against a wall, with him being 6 to 8 inches from it. If you do this it will teach him to sit straight and not sideways. Never let him sit wrong, once he gets into the habit, he will be harder to correct. You have to stop him from sitting sideways before he does it. If your dog likes to sit wide away from you, I will use a dowel, to gently tap him on the rear end to guide him into place. If she likes to sit too close and almost behind you, take your right foot and put it where she wants to sit, before she does it. This takes some practice and coordination but will work. If you have to re sit the dog, I would take a step forward or two and tell her straight or you can go into a circle to replace her. Now I would practice , what I call is the heel and sit, heel and sit. This teaches your dog to sit every time you stop. I usually do this with repetition of at least five times. In this exercise you will have the dog sitting on your left side, go into a heel and then after about five or six steps halt and have him re- sit with the voice command. Now as your stopping ,right then you will want to pull up on the collar with your right hand. So make sure as your left foot does it’s little stomp you take your right hand to the collar to pull up at the same time your left hand goes to his haunches. This will be a see-saw motion, of you manipulating your dogs body into the sit. As your dogs start sitting every time you stop, you will want to pull up on his collar with out the see- saw actions stated earlier. Most people’s dogs will sit to much forward because they are not pulling up on the collar right as their left foot hit’s the ground. I also will work with a wall, inside or outside the house right next to the dog, this also will teach him to sit in the proper position according to my body. Both of these are a very boring exercise so try and make it a exciting one, and up beat as possible. Give lots of treats or a favorite toy, every time he sits and lots of praise. If he is having a problem with this exercise make sure you become very upbeat, using your voice, and attitude along with your treats to encourage him to perform well. Make this a happy exercise!

Now if what I just told you is not working I want you to visualize these next instructions.

Have him on your left, you walking along, now as your thinking your going to sit, take your right hand grab the dogs collar where it attaches to the leash and pull up. This is as your stopping not after, but as your stopping. It all has to be one motion, then with your left hand place it on his haunches. If he is going in front of you, then your not quick enough. You need to pull on on his collar right were you want him to stop. It is a see X saw motion, right hand on collar as foot is coming down and left hand on haunches as your foot stops on the ground. You may need to put your left hand on his outer part of his body the part facing away from you, and push him in to the position you want. Right next to you, His shoulder should be at your knee. I hoped this helped you understand this better.

MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE LIKE A GSD.
