Teaching Leadership Thru Walking Your Dog
First of all you will need at least a six foot leash, flexi lead, or long line. The whole purpose of this lesson is to teach the dog to look to you for leadership and to follow you. It teaches him that as long as he tries to be the leader he goes no where.
So as you start out walking your dog, as soon as the dog hits the end of the line or starts to pull, you will stop. You will just flat out stop, and say NO or UGG just as you stop. Then you will call out to the dog, saying (Brandy come) softly. As soon as the dog starts to come back to you. You will then take a step forward and keep going as long as the dog is paying attention to you. As long as the dog keeps coming back to you, then you walk forward. But if the dogs pulls or hit’s the end of the line, you will stop. You will say No or Ugg again as you stop. Again call the dog to you in a soft tone, when the dog comes to you again you walk forward. This will teach him, he must look to you for leadership, he does not decide where or when to go but looks to you to do so. He will then start walking stopping and going back to you, making a circle forward and back to you. As long as he does not hit the end of the line or pull you, he gets to go forward. This will take a short while to teach. But, after only three different walks he should be doing looking to you for leadership and walking with out pulling very well. I have a very hard, very high drive female pup that took three different walks to get her to accept me as the leader. Good luck this should work very well for you all.
MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE LIKE A GSD.
