 GorgeRail Trip
Part 4: Monday-Tuesday,
May 19th and 20th, 2003
By Funnelfan

UP's Southeast Switcher is busy with chores along the old SP mainline near Milwaukee, OR.
A MHKCO train at Mill St. in Salem, OR.
The Southbound Coast Starlight south of Turner in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Mt. Jefferson can be seen in the distance.
Not much has changed at the old BN OE yard in Albany, save for the paint on the rolling stock and a few signs.
On Tuesday I began my trip back north. I start by chasing the Salem Switcher north toward Woodburn among the flower fields.
Espee's old Brooklyn Yard still sees a fair amount of activity.
Bonneville Dam had all it's spillways open. The weather it heavily overcast with intermittent sprinkles. The trains are not running for the moment because there is a unit ballast train dumping rock between North Bonneville and Rooster Rock.
Soon a whole fleet of westbounds is heading my way, but due to the crappy weather, I didn't put much effort into photographing them. I was more interested in scouting for locations for future trips, and exploring the upper end of the old Broughton flume. Here we see the ZCHCPTL at the west switch at Cooks.
I also catch the UROOINB at the east switch at Cooks.
A M-PASINB from the Cooks-Underwood road way up behind Drano Lake.
The flume in the woods below Mill B.
The flume at a station just before it drops off into the Columbia River Gorge just above Drano Lake. The flume was in operation until 1986 and carried rough cut lumber between Willard and a trackside finishing mill at Hood. Most of it can still be seen today, though rockslides and fallen trees have taken their toll. A couple noted episodes of Lassie were filmed involving a ride down this flume.
A loaded grain train approaching the Drano tunnel from above.
UP's Bend local waiting to enter the mainline at OT Jct.
A Boardman coal train is tied down at Juniper Siding in the Wallua Gap.

That's All Folks!
