Commonly Used Symbols
in
Feline Genetics
For the purposes of doing charts and uniformity of research, many traits are given a symbol to represent that trait when doing the checkerboard charts and other calculations.  A capital letter (preferably a letter from the trait itself) is always used to indicate the dominant trait and the same lower case letter indicates the recessive.  Each letter code indicates one location (locus) on the chromosome and any other mutations at the same location.
Here is a rundown on the ones I'm frequently using, plus some
directly related to our Bengals:
A,a Agouti  [yellow/black banding on single hairs] (a) non agouti
(this is the gene required for a tabbies as it establishes an
       background and solid markings.)
B,b,b1 (B) Black (b) chocolate (b1) cinnamon
C,c,ca,cs,cb (C) Full Color (c) full albino (ca) blue eyed albino (cs) Siamese (incl. Lynx points), (cb) Burmese (Sepia), (cbcs) Tonkinese (Mink).
D,d (D) Dense pigmentation (d) diluted pigmentation
(unknown symbol) Large ears is dominant to small ears **
(G,g) (no assigned symbol) glitter is recessive to non-glitter (I use (G) for non glitter & (g) for glittered.)  I understand, however, these have been assigned to another trait are deffinately unofficial. Glitter also seems to have 2 different types and how these are both related or even if they are both related has yet to be established.  (If these are carried on different loci they will have different symbols.)
(P,p) (no assigned symbol) I use (P) for non pelted "normal" coats and (p) for pelted or softer coats.**  There appears to be a certain amount of poly genetic influence at work here as there seems to be a variation in the amount of softness, but don't have any other information.
I,i Inhibitor [(silver) inhibits agouti and root color pigments from
developing within these hair shafts] (i) non inhibitor (non silver)
L,l (L) short hair (l) long hair
T,Ta,tb
(Ts,tm,Tsr )
(T) mackerel tabby pattern (Ta) Abyssinian (tb) blotched or classic tabby pattern.  This gene causes the design or type of pattern to be expressed and works with the agouti gene.   [personal unofficial symbols I've adopted for my own use: (Ts) spotted tabby and (tm) marble and Tsr for rosetted spots, though there is little information on the genetics of this trait it definately appears to be recessive but also seems polygenic.]
(no known symbol) ticked coat appears to be incompletely
dominant to clear coat.**
(no known symbol) Timid is dominant over friendly.**
(no known symbol) Dark tummy is dominant over whited tummy
(but seems more complicated than straight dominant - recessive)**
(no known symbol) Foriegn body build dominates stocky body build.
