| Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, 30 miles apart on Interstate 90, are the largest towns and county seats of neighboring Spokane County, Washington, and Kootenai County, Idaho. Coeur d'Alene fronts on a large lake of the same name, with a large city park with lots of shade trees and an adjacent public beach. The Spokane River, the surface outlet of Coeur d'Alene Lake, flows through Spokane, over falls in the city center surrounded by another large park, and eventually joins the Columbia west of Spokane.
The area is in the western fringe of the pine-forested foothills of the Rockies, on the east edge of the Columbia Basin sagebrush steppe biome, and has a semi-arid climate, with four distinct seasons and moderate snow in winter. |
