You may well like other choices better for some of these operating systems and protocols. These are just the ones I like, or have heard good things about. The suggestions under Linux and Mac are partly based on input from other people. If you think there's something superior, feel free to email me.

Probably at some point I'll be adding a table row and page about RSS aggregators, a new Internet news feed system. As of third quarter 2005 it seems too early for any recommendations; the software and people's usage patterns are still developing.
