Common Name: Ruffed Grouse

Scientific Name (Genus-species): Bonasa umbellus

Length (bill-tail): 17"

Identifying Chacteristics: Small crest, black ruffs around neck, multibanded tail

Male attracts females by beating its wings making a low frequency thumping sound

Habitat: open forests, brushy prairies

Rarely seen in our area, but thumping sound is commonly heard
