Drive-in Cinema

Sometime ago I had an idea to put together an outdoor cinema for friends and neighbors. In July, 2000, this became a reality.

About 25 friends showed up. After bar-b-queing burgers and consuming much beer, we relaxed to an summer outdoor evening of 50's style drive-in entertainment but accompanied with the latest in audio and video technology.

We started with VHS's of a Betty Boop with Grandpa cartoon; then had a vintage snack bar ad ("Let's all go to the lobby") with animated dancing popcorn and hot dogs; then a 'Koko the Klown' perversion from "The Groove Tube" (1981); a preview "Catholic High School Girls in Trouble" (from Kentucky Fried Movie); then a disclaimer on the feature film and a vintage feature film trailer and the main DVD feature "The Matrix"

We had six channel sound using three rack mount 200/wt + per channel amps; mixed and equalized using sound reinforcement speakers on stands. A friend supplied a hi-res video projector shown on a 12-foot screen. Living out of town in the country made it perfect for cranking up the sound to theatre + levels.

It was a lot of fun and I have to admit the hi-res video projector is a "must have" item for the future.
