The Benewah Soil and Water
Conservation District is one of 51 Conservation Districts in the state of
Idaho. It is located in the panhandle of Northern Idaho. The
District officially organized on March 18, 1946. The original district
covered Benewah County; however in 1953 the southern half of Shoshone County
was incorporated into the District. The District boasts a large
agriculture base as well as a significant timber base.
The District is a legal subdivision of state government that operates under
state law. Our main function is that of liaison, bringing together
state, federal, and private sector's resources to solve conservation and
natural resource issues. We work to assist landowners in the planning
and implementation of best management practices and provide technical
information to help landowners and land users make the best use of land and
water resources. The District also sponsors youth education programs
and administers Idaho's agricultural clean water projects.
A five-member board of supervisors who voluntarily serve without pay governs
the District. Supervisors serve a four-year term and are elected
through the same procedure as state legislators on general election day.
The District receives limited funds from local government and is eligible
for matching funds from the state. They provide reports and records to
the Idaho Soil Conservation Commission.
District Board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month,
except in August. The meetings are open to the public and are held at
the USDA Service Center, 900 E Street in Plummer, Idaho. Call the
office for exact times (208) 686-1699.
