Objectives: The learner will...
...explore and verify the accuracy of the simple machine work equation using a 1st class lever simulation

Purpose:
Using a 1st class lever simulation you will explore and verify the accuracy of this simple machine work equation:

WORKout = WORKin
Effort Force x Effort Distance = Resistance Force x Resistance Distance
Fe x De = Fr x Dr

Setup:
to start the virtual lever lab illustrated below:

Procedure:

  1. Select 2 under # of Masses
  2. Drag each mass to the end of the seesaw (2.00 meters)
  3. Adjust the first mass to 5 kg and the second mass to 3 kg
  4. Use the values in the table below and the WORK EQUATION to determine the missing values
  5. Verify these values in the simulator by adjusting the masses and distances and selecting RELEASE to test
Data:
Fe (mass 1) De WORKin
Fe x De
Fr (mass 2) Dr WORKout
Fr x Dr
Balanced?
5 kg .2 m   2.5 kg ?
7 kg .6 m   ? 1.4 m
4 kg ?   10 kg .6 m
? 1.4 m   6 kg .4 m
