Objectives: The learner will...
...routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications, communications, and productivity. (NETS 4, 5, 6)

You are about to create a personal science website and use it to post your future lab and workshop experiences. In this workshop you will not be required to learn HTML. Many web servers provide online editors that allow you to quickly create a web site with no experience and only a minimum of advertising interference. If you have previous experience or an existing web account and are using another editor from home, please feel free to do so, otherwise you will be using Geocities Pagebuilder© to compose your web page. If you are doing this at home and do not have web access you should go to the public library and sign up for free web access ( usually a 1 hour time limit ).

  1. Go to www.geocities.com and sign up for a FREE web account. You will have to provide a valid email address which can be obtained beforehand at www.yahoo.com or www.hotmail.com. Please write down your account name and password in a secret place! Your account name will become part of your web address
(e.g. www.geocities.com/scotty42 ). Often the account name you first suggest has already been taken and you may have to settle for an alternate
    (e.g. www.geocities.com/scotty83815)
  2. Once your account is created you will be ready to start building your science web folio. If you are an expert with HTML you may use the Advanced Editor, but it is recommended that you use Geocities Pagebuilder©. After clicking on this it may take a few minutes (depending on your connection speed) to download the Pagebuilder editor. Be careful not to close any of the extra windows that open as this may terminate the application.
  3. Once the Pagebuilder has loaded it should look similar to this (except for the funny boxes):
  4. Mostly you will be using the SAVE and TEXT buttons. When you click on the TEXT button a box will appear in the page that can be moved, resized and colored. Click within the box to add text. Highlight the text you would like to color, make bold, italicize, change size (default is 12), etc.
  5. When you have titled your page with your name and added your first detailed Lab 1 entry, click the SAVE button and choose INDEX as your page name. It may then ask you to confirm this. Do so.
  6. Click the PREVIEW button and a separate browser window will open to display your page. If you approve, then look in the Address box of your browser and you will see your web address (e.g. http://www.geocities.com/jacobson42...). Highlight the address and COPY it, then PASTE it into an email to the instructor so that you may be graded for it's completion.
  7. Remember that in the future you will be adding ALL lab/workshop entries to this online web folio/journal as part of the lab/workshop grade.
  8. Feel free to experiment with the PICTURES and ADD-ONS buttons. If you screw up just highlight what you don't want and DELETE.
  9. Remember to exit Pagebuilder and log out of Geocities when you are done.
  10. Show the instructor your website for a grade or (email the link).
