Objectives: The learner will...
...design, construct and launch an air pressurized water rocket using common materials, a simulation program and various web-based resources.
...routinely and efficiently use online information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, and productivity. (NETS 4, 5, 6)
...select and apply technology tools for research, information analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making in content learning. (NETS 4, 5)
...investigate and apply simulations in real-world situations. (NETS 3, 5, 6)

Purpose: In this workshop you will run a simulation program to find the best way to construct a water rocket. Then you will build and launch your rocket.
  • Run the Free Water Rocket Simulator program that can be found on the computer desktop, copied from the class CD, or downloaded at www.seeds2learn.com/rocketSoftware.html. Click here for PC Water Rocket Simulator or Click here for the MAC version
  • Go into SETUP and set PRESSURE at 70 PSI
  • Adjust only the WATER AMOUNT at first then go into FLIGHT and click LAUNCH ROCKET. Try to find the water amount that gives the MAX HEIGHT.
  • Now try different bottle sizes and LAUNCH to see which will give you maximum height.
  • Record the following data:
      • %Water__________
      • Bottle size__________
      • Max Height (m)__________
  • Research the web for efficient water rocket designs then create a detailed diagram of your proposed rocket plan that includes your data recorded above.
  • Research Links:
The Water Rocket Playground | Dean's Benchtop | Clifford's Homepage
  • Build your rocket and submit it with your data/diagram to the teacher on launch day for a grade. Prizes will be awarded for maximum altitude , flight duration and creativity/beauty.
Grading Deductions (out of 100 points total):
    Sharp nose cone -10 pts
    No parachute -10 pts
    Metal parts -10 pts
Less than 2 fins -10 pts
    Breaks after launch/landing -10 pts

    Additional BONUS options!:
2 students will receive bonus for operating altimeters
2 students will receive bonus for timing flight duration
1 student will receive bonus for digital photography
    1 student will receive
    bonus for operating the launcher
Research, design and build a better water rocket launcher or altitude measuring device/system.
