I lie beside you, hold you
and you are real. A part of me
taken, given and taken again.
I hold your stolen life,
pretend I can be strong,
allow you to go free, unfettered.
While in these last minutes I am dying too.

I cannot tell you
that you are my completeness,
that as your eyes absorb me
your innocence baptizes me
and my fleeting eternity is contained
in the mirror of your face.

I cannot convey how
knowing you for this brief time
has changed me.
How you, in some part, remain alive
in every cell of me.

Only memory
is a treasure I can keep forever--
Only love
and faith that I will see you again, my baby.
