Incidental Light
by
Amethyst

sometimes
like looking to the side
at night
trying to fit the key
into the door

memories of laughter
at some outrageous thingdragonfly
you said
play and run
like the faint surprise
of light
the dim metallic gleam
at the edge of darkness

at the edge of vision
that disappears
under direct gaze
and the blind hand fumbles
until the eyes turn away
to see once more

I lived those years
looking to the side
subsisting
on incidental light
to keep from being swallowed
by your darkness

until my key stumbled
on the lock
and let me out
and let me in
to the safety
of my own heart
