If a poem should cross your path
and follow you
disguised as a stalk of common grass
in the pink and gold and green morning
in carnelian and jade and gold first light

dancing and swayinggrass flowers
in morning wind
yellow fairy-flowers billowing
petals fluttering like
uncertain birds

If a poem should find you
memorize
how one delicate flower
lifts and shimmers bright yellow, rust and gold
how the green that sheathed the unborn blossom
glistens
how one dew drop holds
a rainbow world mirroring the sky

Drink each gesture with your eyes
stand still and watch
missing nothing
taking it all in until
you become the stalk of grass dancing

Hold close
keep safe
the ebb and flow of light
recite it to your heart

Now the grass can go in dignity and joy
in hard rain driven earthward
dropping its seeds in a final prayer
broken by storm
or wild hoof

Now it can go laughing
treasuring a secret
that someone crossed its path
and shared its truth

that it entrusted you
with its immortality
