Amethystyou leave
and day clicks shut
behind youbecoming insubstantial
I chase down the moon
on the trail
past park benches
trying to
out-run the darkthe moon offers
her most seductive smile
Is she half full
or half empty?
I wonder if
together
we are wholeby the time
street-lights sleep
I am in the basement
dissolving into shadow
my transparent hands
sift through
colorless files
dim, gray pages
with cyanotic wordsfootsteps in the hall
the door opens
you register surprise
then a knowing smile
you think
I came in early
for the workyou cannot know
how your light defines me
illuminates me and
makes me realyou ask
when I got hereand I can only think
of that moment
before dawn
when birds shriek
and cry like souls in cages
when flowers wake blindly
opening their arms
