This class will examine the roots of folk and blues music in America, and their influences, using the recently reissued  "American Anthology of Folk Music" as its source.  This musical collection , originally released in the 1950's, created the huge awareness of American folk and blues music and sent researchers down into the South searching for the performers, resulting in the rediscovery of many of them.

8 videos covering performers and cultural influences will be viewed, as well as listening to recordings and demonstrations of playing styles. The Smithsonian Institute has provided detailed information related to these recordings for this class, and the songs, performers, and playing styles will be discussed and examined indepth, including the Carter Family, Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, and Furry Lewis.

Frank Delaney is a Folk Music Researcher and performer and has played at many festivals, clubs and coffeehouses, including the Northwest Folklife Festival. In the 1960's he was stationed in the South when many of the older folk and blues performers were being rediscovered.
