DSL Setup for Cisco 678/675

Hardware Installation:
  1. Connect power cable.
  2. Connect computer external serial port to the 675's management port with included cable DB9-to-RJ45 cable.
  3. Install PCI ethernet (NIC) card in computer, following the included instructions.
  4. Connect computer PCI NIC card to the 675's ethernet port with included RJ45 crossover cable.
Terminal Connection:
  1. Install HyperTerminal from Windows95/98 CD if necessary.
    • Click the 'Start' menu, 'Settings', 'Control Panel'.
    • Double click on 'Add/Remove Programs'.
    • Click the 'Windows Settings' tab.
    • Click and highlight the 'Communications' option, then click the 'Details' button.
    • Check the box left of 'HyperTerminal'.
    • Click the 'Ok' button on all and any of the open windows.
    • Insert your Windows 95/98 CD if your are prompted.
    • Restart Windows if you are prompted.

  2. Start HyperTerminal
    • Click the 'Start' button, 'Programs', 'Accessories', 'Communications'.
    • Double click 'hypertrm.exe'.

  3. Create a connection
    • If you are prompted to install a modem, click 'No'.
    • Enter "675" in the 'Name' field of the 'Connection Description' window and then click 'Ok'.
    • Set the 'Connect Using' list to "Direct to COM#", where # is your external serial port number.
    • Click 'Ok'.
    • Set 'Bits per Second' to '38400'.
    • Set 'Data Bits' to '8'.
    • Set 'Parity' to 'None.'
    • Set 'Stop Bits' to '1'.
    • Set 'Flow Control' to 'None'.
    • Click 'Ok'.
Configure the 675
  1. Establish terminal session
    • Press your 'Enter' key.
    • If you are not prompted in the HyperTerminal window with "Password:", check the serial/COM port setup. Also consult the hardware manuals for the correct implementation.

  2. Login
    • Press your 'Enter' key at the password prompt.
    • Type "enable" at the cbos# prompt and then press your 'Enter' key.
    • Press your 'Enter' key at the password prompt.

  3. Version Validation
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type "show version". This should display:
      Cisco Broadband Operating System
      CBOS (tm) 675 Software (C675-I-M), Version V2.2.0.000
      									
    • If the 'Version' is less than 2.2.0, please call our technical support.

  4. Disable Bridge Mode
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set bridging rfc1483 disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set bridging ppp disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.

  5. Enable PPP Mode
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set ppp wan0-0 login 'username'" (where 'username' is your account username) and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set ppp wan0-0 password 'password'" (where 'password' is your account password) and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set ppp restart enabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.

  6. Enable Network Address Translation - NAT
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set nat enabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set nat timeout icmp 300" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set nat timeout tcp idle 300" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set nat timeout udp 300" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set nat timeout other 300" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.

  7. Enable Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - DHCP
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set dhcp server enabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set dhcp server pool 0 dns 216.255.223.194" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set dhcp server pool 0 sdns 216.255.223.195" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.

  8. Disable services
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set web disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set telnet disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set tftp disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set snmp disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set rip disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set multicast forwarding disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set radius disabled" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.

  9. Validate line to Qwest
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "show int wan0" and push your 'Enter' key. You should get similar results to the following:
      wan0 ADSL Physical Port
      	Line Trained
      	640 Kbps down; 272 Kbps up; 340 baud
      	Line Quality 44 dB
      	TX Power +11.3 dB  Remote TX Power +18.7 
      	dB GTI FW Rel 3.00
      									
    • If the "Line Trained" reads "Line Not Trained", and/or the WAN LNK light on the 675 blinks repeatedly without staying solid, call Qwest customer support for troubleshooting support.
    • If the "Line Quality" is below 18db, the DSL line will not function properly. Call Qwest customer support for troubleshooting support.

  10. Validate the PPP connection to Icehouse
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in type "show int wan0-0" and push your 'Enter' key. You should get results like the following:
      WAN0-0 ATM Logical Port
      	PVC (VPI 1, VCI 1) is open.
      	ScalaRate set at 272 Kbps
      	AAL 5         UBR Traffic
      	PPP LCP State: Opened
      	PPP NCP State (IP Routing): Opened

      	RADIUS: disabled

    • If the "PPP LCP State" or the "PPP NCP State" is not in the 'Opened' state for a prolonged ammount of time, please call Icehouse customer support.
    • Type in "show ppp" and push your 'Enter' key. You should get results something like this:

    • If the "STATE" is not in the 'Opened' state for a prolonged ammount of time, please call Icehouse customer support.

  11. Set local 675 passwords
    • Login if necessary (see above).
    • Type in "set password exec " (where is your password) and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "set password enable " (where is your password) and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "write" and push your 'Enter' key.
    • Type in "reboot" and push your 'Enter' key.
