Please note that The Sandman and all other Vertigo
Comics are created for mature readers, and that links from this page may
lead to areas that some people find offensive. Use at your own risk...
In 1987, a man named Neil
Gaiman was approached by a friend, an editor at DC Comics, and asked
if he would be willing to write a monthly title for their company.
After rejecting his initial ideas of bringing back old characters, she
reminded him of a conversation from long ago- of an almost forgotten character,
in a story set almost entirely in dreams. "Do it," Neil remembers
her saying in the afterword to "Preludes and Nocturnes", the first Sandman
collection. "But create a new character- someone no-one's
seen before."
Neil Gaiman succeeded, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
He created The
Sandman and his family, The Endless-
-
Dream - the lord of the world of Dreams. You've been there- it's
because of the journey there that, at night, you remember how to fly, but
in the morning, you always forget.
-
Death - Dream's beautiful sister. For most of us, the most terrifying
one of the Endless... but for some reason, when we see her, we fall in
love with her, and search the rest of our lives for her...
-
Destiny - the eldest brother. He carries the book where all that
was and is and will be is written, and he lives at the center of all mazes;
for what is life, if not a maze, fooling us into thinking we have the ability
to make choices, when we know full well that there is only one way out?
-
Delirium - the youngest of the Endless; the personification of insanity.
Delerium was once, long ago, Delight. Only she and Destiny know why,
and perhaps it is better we never know...
-
Despair - Her garden is a gray void, filled with mirrors, through which
she can watch the despairing souls of mortals. It is said that this
is not the original Despair, but that she died, somehow. Perhaps,
this too is a secret we should not delve into too deeply...
-
Desire is Despair's twin; for what else causes true despair? Desire
changes sexes as easily as we change clothes, but one thing is always the
same- whatever he/she looks like, she/he is the one thing you desire most
in the world.
-
And Destruction... Destruction is no longer among the Endless.
He left his post centuries ago, knowing full well that Mankind was perfectly
capable of performing acts of destruction without his assistance.
This page is designed to be a tribute to Neil Gaiman,
and his work, as well as the excellent publishing companies, DC and Vertigo
(who created 90% of my extensive collection...) Please feel free
to browse the links above, which will take you directly to DC's web page,
as well as links to other pages about The
Sandman and Mr.
Gaiman.
This page will also have my opinions and ideas that
were inspired by re-reading the Sandman series- a very regular occurence,
which I try to have happen at least once every couple of months.
