    In 1987, a man named Neil Gaiman was approached by a friend, an editor at DC Comics, and asked if he would be willing to write a monthly title for their company.  After rejecting his initial ideas of bringing back old characters, she reminded him of a conversation from long ago- of an almost forgotten character, in a story set almost entirely in dreams.  "Do it," Neil remembers her saying in the afterword to "Preludes and Nocturnes", the first Sandman collection.  "But create a new character- someone no-one's seen before."

    Neil Gaiman succeeded, beyond a shadow of a doubt.  He created The Sandman and his family, The Endless-
