The
Worlds' End Inn and Tavern BBSSpokane, Washington's Worlds' End Inn and Tavern BBS system originally went online on August 1, 1997. Although a few callers logged on, the system had no focus, nothing that "set it apart" from any other BBS. Therefore, the system was completely recreated, and everything was reset on November 1, 1997.
Worlds' End is a single-line, community-oriented BBS system that specializes in discussion groups. Our users fall into two types; people who are looking for a BBS system where they can talk, and people who don't seem to call back... (grin) Worlds' End is actually crazy enough to pride itself on not having anything for people who aren't interested in talking! However, for anyone who impresses us with their witty banter, Worlds' End does try to offer high-quality online games and the best shareware and freeware we can find.
The Worlds' End Inn and Tavern BBS currently runs on a Pentium-133, and uses Mustang Software's Wildcat! 5. The board currently only has 250 megs of hard drive space available, but more will be added as soon as financially possible. At some point, we are also planning to purchase another computer so that Worlds' End will no longer have to share time with our other applications.
Worlds' End is a 100% free system. There is no fee to use the system, and there never will be. Of course, this means that Worlds' End will never become an Internet-based system, and will probably never grow larger than a two-line system. As far as we, the System Operators (or Sysops), are concerned, this is exactly the way things should be. We have fond memories of logging into a local BBS system, meeting people, and discovering that they lived right down the street from us. Although the Internet does have a lot of information, and provides a great way for people to connect on a global scale, the local community is often forgotten.
Worlds' End is also an all-ages system. The Sysops try very hard to make sure that anyone can log into our system and talk, whatever their age. This is not to say that we don't discuss possibly controversial issues, or prevent people from speaking their minds; but we do not tolerate discussions of an adult or pornographic nature, and we ask everyone to watch their language. We are fortunate to have a small loyal group of friendly users, who are very entertaining to talk to.
At the beginning of each month, the Sysops go through the user accounts and delete unused accounts; new users (people who have logged in, but have not yet sent a message to the Sysops asking to have their account registered) have their accounts deleted if they haven't called for two months, Registered users (people who have requested that we formally register their accounts) have their accounts deleted if they haven't called for three months; and full users (people who have called the system often and joined the discussions often) have their accounts deleted if they haven't called for six months. After our most recent cleanup, we had 44 active accounts.
