The Transition Portfolio was developed by Midge Rigsby and Roxanne Coast of Spokane School District 81's IMAGES program. The portfolio process was designed to aid the transition from school to work for students with special needs aged 19 to 21 years. These young adults had little or no self-advocacy skills, life direction, or even knowledge of their own paper trail, i.e. location of their birth certificate or Social Security Card, doctor's phone number, adult service providers information, health history, etc.
The transition students demonstrated their needs for affirmation as productive members of their community, self-determination for their future plans, and the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves and their choices.
Midge Rigsby and Roxanne Coast and the IMAGES students, modified and fine-tuned the Transition Portfolio process to meet these specific student needs at this exciting, pivotal point in their lives. The Transition Portfolio creation is a process and as with all processes undergoes changes and transformations as individual's needs, goals, and situations change. It is a dynamic life-long process.
This internet/intranet project was designed by Vickie Hill to assist educators, parents, and students to learn the Transition Portfolio process as developed by Midge Rigsby, Roxanne Coast, and the IMAGES students.
For each part of the Transition Portfolio, a goal, rationale, and process are listed. The goal states what the student does to created this portion of the Transition Portfolio. The rationale explains why this portion of the Transition Portfolio is important. The process provides information, tips, and resources for how to create this part of the Transition Portfolio.
Links are given to show samples of different parts of the portfolio and exercises for students to use to work through a process.
Templates for the exercises may be downloaded. Templates provide students, who have little computer experience, an easier means to complete a portfolio process. Note: Templates are written in Microsoft Word 97 and 2000. Earlier versions of Word will make template look like nonsense. Click on this line for "How to Use Templates"
The Download Worksheets link in the main menu, includes all the exercises used in the Transition Portfolio, for the user's convenience.
For user's convenience, the Resource link lists many links which may be helpful. An active internet connection is required.
A Job Shadow Program is also outlined in the project. A process is suggested with links to exercises and resources from the internet.
Floppy disks will be distributed for either the Mac or PC machines. All of the information contained here, at this time, resides on the disk. Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator may be used to view the disk. An active internet connection is not necessary when using the disk. However, an active internet connection is required to see links in the Resource section.
The Transition Portfolio folder may be copied on to the hard drive. A shortcut may be created from the "start.html" file and placed onto the desktop, for convenience.

When download is complete, the file may be kept safe from tampering by making it Read-only. A student will be unable to alter the file when it is Read-only. (This is important mostly for the Excel Worksheets and the Word Documents. Templates are harder to alter, but could be set to Read-only, too.)
To move from line to line in a template, use the mouse or the arrow keys. Do not use Enter.
